DMA Supports Do Not Call List
Monday June 30, 2003
The Federal Trade Commission's new rules for telemarketers are causing quite a controversy. Americans are flocking to the National Do Not Call Registry to register their phone number. Beginning in October, if telemarketers call a number on the list, they could face up to $11,000 in fines for each call.
The Direct Marketing Association supports the new rules, even though layoffs in the telemarketing industry are expected. One expert predicts about 2 million of 6.5 million telemarketers will face unemployment. The DMA previously sued the FTC over guidelines it imposed earlier this year but says it will work with the government to strengthen the new regulations.
