Tip of the Week: Negotiating Pay

Tuesday December 30, 2003
How much is your job worth? It's a question that depends on a number of factors: what city you live in, your experience and even what others in your area and job are earning. Know the market before you begin negotiations.

Overpricing yourself is just as bad as underpricing yourself. When you get an offer, don't be afraid to tell your potential employer you'd like to think it over. Calculate your own living costs and also do your research to make sure it's a fair offer. Many career Web sites also have lists of various jobs and their average salaries to aid you in your research.
