Tip of the Week: What's a SPEC Ad?
Friday July 30, 2004
This week's career tip comes straight from the Ask Apryl mailbag:
Q: What does SPEC stand for?
A: SPEC is short for speculative ad. It's an ad you're writing on your own to build your portfolio. This isn't a "real" assignment. It's material you're writing to show potential clients or employers samples of your writing.
For example, if you have no writing samples, you can write an ad on SPEC. You can take any advertisement and give it your own personal touch. Make sure you clearly label it as a SPEC AD. Just remember, Speculation: It Can Get You a Job.

Thank you for this tip and your guide to advertising in general.
I’m seriously considering leaving my current employment with a real estate firm and moving into advertising.
I have a creative mind and though i’ve been interviewed by 2 top firms in Kenya Africa, I seem not to be able to show my skills.
So I’ll follow your tips - as i’ve not been doing this - and see where it’ll land me!
Thank you so much.
