Kerry Ad Strikes Back at Veterans Group
Thursday August 19, 2004
The John Kerry camp has released a :30 spot in response to a :60 ad claiming he has lied about his military career and betrayed other veterans of the Vietnam War. The new :30 TV ad features Jim Rassmann, a veteran who was thrown off the swift boat Kerry was on when they came under heavy fire.
"All these Viet Cong were shooting at me. I expected I'd be shot. When he pulled me out of the river, he risked his life to save mine," Rassmann says in the ad.
The ad goes on to say the Navy called Kerry a hero and awarded him the Bronze star. It also claims Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the group who ran the anti-Kerry ad, is funded by President Bush's "big money supporters."
Republican Senator John McCain wanted President Bush to condemn the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ad that attacked Kerry. Bush appeared on Larry King Live and didn't outright condemn the ad. "I haven't seen the ad, but what I do condemn is these regulated, soft-money expenditures," he said.
Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ran the anti-Kerry ads in West Virginia, Ohio and Wisconsin. Kerry's camp plans to air its ad in the same states.
