Pfizer Pulls Celebrex Advertising
Monday December 20, 2004
Pfizer has pulled all advertising for Celebrex just days after the company learned the arthritis drug could pose a heart attack risk. Ads in newspapers, radio, TV and magazines will all be halted.
Pfizer spent $87.6 million to advertise Celebrex in 2003 with another $71 million spent in the first nine months of 2004. The company had just launched a new ad campaign promoting Celebrex's safety record after Merck voluntarily recalled its arthritis drug Vioxx because of safety concerns.
Over the weekend, Pfizer also replaced the Celebrex home page with a link to an official press release regarding the long-term study's findings. Pfizer maintains it will continue to market Celebrex to doctors but the Food and Drug Administration says it's considering options such as severe label warnings or even a mandatory withdrawal of the drug from the U.S. market.
