Blockbuster Sued Over "The End of Late Fees"

Wednesday February 23, 2005
New Jersey Attorney General Peter Harvey has filed a lawsuit against Blockbuster Inc., saying the "No More Late Fees" commercial is deceptive advertising. Blockbuster's new policy eliminates late fees but if you keep the rental for more than a week, you're charged $1.25 per day for a restocking fee and if you keep the rental for more than 30 days, the customer is charged the retail price.

Harvey says those fees coupled with the commercial Blockbuster is airing violate New Jersey's consumer fraud act. Blockbuster released a statement saying they are surprised and disappointed by the New Jersey Attorney General's actions and that they believe the end of late fees is a terrific program.
