Mini Warns to Watch Out for Counterfeits

Thursday April 21, 2005
The Counter Counterfeit Commission says you should be on the lookout for counterfeit Mini Coopers. The CCC shows you how to detect a genuine Mini and you can even buy a consumer alert DVD for $19.99.

The Web site isn't a hoax exactly. It's part of the Mini's marketing machine created by ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky.

What makes the entire counterfeit Mini campaign even more noteworthy is that many people don't even realize it's in jest until they check out the Web site. Adfreak reports the Crispin Porter + Bogusky released some of the phone messages they've received from consumers with some calling the campaign "brilliant" and others calling asking if it's a joke and even saying they're "defrauding people."
