Scathing Headline Removed from Harvard Brochure

Tuesday June 21, 2005
About 150,000 prospective students who received a Harvard brochure saw a doctored photo that removed a headline from the school's newspaper. The Harvard Crimson's headline of "Summers To Face No Confidence Vote" instead showed a block of unreadable text in its place.

The headline refers to Harvard President Lawrence Summers who said women differ from men in their abilities for math and science. Summers has since apologized for his words and said Harvard would spend $50 million for gender-equity programs.

Harvard's dean of admissions and financial aid, William Fitzsimmons, says the headline's replacement was a mistake caused by deadline pressure to get the materials printed and sent. He says the photo would be returned to its original state for future printings.
