Shark Attacks Send Travelers Scrambling

Tuesday June 28, 2005
Two shark attacks on the Florida Panhandle have travelers rescheduling their Fourth of July plans. One attack resulted in the death of Louisiana teenager Jamie Marie Daigle. The other has left Tennessee teen Craig Adam Hutto without his leg.

The shark attacks have occurred during Florida's tourism boom. While the beaches have increased patrols in both water, the air and on land, there's still not much Florida can do to deflect the bad press the sharks are causing.

A report issued less than a week before the first shark attack showed visitors flocking to Florida despite last year's hurricane damage. The state's official tourism marketing agency, Visit Florida, has increased ad spending to attract people to the state.

The results were promising but now tourism to Florida's coastal cities may take a hit. We'll keep you posted on the numbers as they come in.
