Get Happy - You're German!
Thursday October 20, 2005
Germany is spending $35-million on a new ad campaign to cheer up its citizens. Celebrities, sports figures and other high-profile people will be spreading a positive message in magazines, movie theatres and on television.
The campaign tells Germans to Du bist Deutschland, which means "You are Germany." The ads have been designed to make Germans feel better about the country's high unemployment rate, government problems and consumer concerns. Those featured in the campaign say the viewer is just like them and some share personal stories of being down in the dumps with the underlying message of look at me now.
Not everyone is thrilled about the ads. Some Germans have already started Web sites spoofing the campaign. Others say the ads bury the country's huge economic and government problems.
