Google Close to Deal with AOL
Friday December 16, 2005
Search engine Google and Internet service provider (ISP) America Online are in negotiations to give Google a 5-percent stake in AOL for $1 billion. The move would set AOL up with a way to sell advertising by way of searches on Google and the ISP.
Right now, Google sells the ads and gives AOL a cut. Industry pros say the deal would increase each company's online advertising revenues and would likely prevent Microsoft from catching Google and Yahoo! search engines. Microsoft had previously been considered the search engine that would land the deal with AOL.
