GM Puts Hummers in Happy Meals

By August 15, 2006

GM and McDonald's are teaming up to hand out 42 million toy Hummers in Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals. GM lost $3.2 billion in the second quarter of 2006 and execs hope licensing the Hummer as a toy giveaway for children will help promote the brand to parents. Commercials show a family riding in their Hummer to McDonald's. The promotion is scheduled to last until the end of August and is aimed at young boys. Girls can choose Polly Pocket fashion dolls instead of a Hummer for their Happy Meal.

More on McDonald's and Hummer Content for Children:

The McDonald's Web site even points to a site called HummerKids.com. However, when you click on HummerKids.com, you're really taken to Hummer.com. Not a kid's site.

McDonald's does have Hummer content on its site geared toward children. Hummer games, wallpaper and a screensaver with the Hummer logo on each of the pages and "Hey Kids, this is Advertising" in small bold font centered at the top of the pages round out the site.

There will be eight different Hummer versions kids can collect throughout the promotion. Two of them have already been given out with McDonald's handing out 10 million in the first five days of the toy promotion.

Hummer is also launching a new ad campaign for the H3. The three commercials promote the H3's "smaller size, maneuverability, low price and fuel efficiency," according to the company's press release.

McD’s uses kids to pressure their parents? Yet another reason I won’t be going back to a McD’s anytime soon.
