Slash Rocks VW for New Promotion

Buy a car, get an electric guitar. VW has unveiled a new promotion featuring former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash.

V-dubs Rock will run until December 31, 2006, giving anyone who buys or leases a new Rabbit, GTI, Beetle, Beetle convertible or Jetta a custom First Act GarageMaster guitar. What's so special about getting a guitar? You can actually plug it into your VW and play it through the car's stereo.

An interesting approach for VW but the Rabbit "Multiply" commercial still ranks up there as one of the best car commercials for 2006. VW's campaign sure beats Volvo's self-pat on the back in the "Who Would You Give a Volvo To?" campaign, where many customers think they're actually entering their personal stories, photos and videos to win a car.

V-dubs Rock is a cool promo idea to appeal to the younger crowd. But you have to wonder, shouldn't you actually be driving when you're in your car instead of playing a guitar? Even so, tracking this campaign's results will be intriguing to gauge.

Slash is just the first celeb to front the V-Dubs rock promo. Musician John Mayer and actor Christopher Guest will also appear in the campaign's commercials. For those of us who are This is Spinal Tap fans, we're hoping Guest will be reprising his role as guitarist Nigel Tufnel for the VW commercials.
