NFL Sacks Church Super Bowl Party

Friday February 2, 2007
The NFL axed an Indianapolis church's plans to show Super Bowl XLI on a wall projector, citing copyright laws. The NFL got wind of Fall Creek Baptist Church's Super Bowl party when the church promoted the event on its Web site. At first, the NFL objected to the church's Super Bowl party because the church organizers planned to charge a fee to cover snacks and used the copyrighted words "Super Bowl" in their promotions. The league overnighted a letter to the church saying the party had to be canceled.

More on the Church's Nixed Party:

After the fee was dropped, the NFL said the church couldn't use a projector to show the Super Bowl. The league noted the law limits the copyrighted broadcast to a TV no bigger than 55 inches.

Pastor John Newland tells would-be party goers in a statement on the church's Web site that the church's only intent was to provide a family-friendly environment to watch the game. "We have appealed to their legal counsel and exhausted all options without success," he added.
