FTC May Crack Down on Celebrity Endorsements
Monday April 2, 2007
Celebrities making weight loss claims, raving about brands on talk shows and glowing about other products may have new rules to follow. The Federal Trade Commission is considering a move that would put more advertisers under a magnifying glass.
Brandweek reports the FTC could become more involved in commercials for businesses like NutriSystem. The weight loss company is currently using NFL greats Dan Marino and Don Shula in its commercials and the two have lost a combined 54 pounds. While NutriSystem uses a line that says "Results not typical," new FTC rules could force companies to use more fine print to cover claims.
The FTC is open for input until mid-June. After that point, the commission will then meet to decide if new rules need to be issued.
