Paddington Bear Commercial Causes Uproar

Tuesday October 9, 2007
Paddington Bear is known for his love of marmalade sandwiches. But in England, a new commercial featuring the bear putting Marmite on his sandwich is causing quite a stir. Not only are Paddington's fans upset, so is the bear's creator, Michael Bond. In an ironic twist, Bond's daughter Karen Jankel is the one who allowed Marmite to use the bear for its commercial. Jankel heads up Paddington & Co. and gave Marmite permission to run the ad but her dad says he didn't even know about Paddington's role in the commercial until it was too late. Jankel defends her decision, despite daddy's protests.

The Marmite tag line describes this ad campaign perfectly. "You either love it or hate it."
