Based on the lack of proper English being used by on air personalities and in commercials, I would say an education in English will only frustrate someone in the industry.
In talk radio, an education in history can be helpful. On a music station, communications can be helpful. In a TV environment, all they care about is how you look! At an agency, knowing math and sales would be helpful. In any advertising function that is office related, having computer skills and knowing math will set a person apart from most!
There is a difference between being a “writer” and being a “copywriter”.
Copywriting is about selling, not about perfect grammer. It’s about generating business. My 2 cents: Get a degree in Marketing or Marcom, get experience selling something in person, put together a portfolio — and sell yourself.
