McDonald's Advertises Through 40-Acre Corn Maze

Tuesday July 29, 2008
In mid-July Papa John's announced plans to grow a crop circle ad in the wheat fields near Colorado's Denver International Airport to promote its whole wheat crust. Now McDonald's is promoting its new McCafe coffees using a 40-acre corn maze near Lincoln, Nebraska. Visitors can navigate through the 2008 McDonald's Maze at Benson Farms and get a coupon for a free McCafe latte, mocha or cappuccino. The most difficult maze phase takes 45 to 90 minutes to explore.

Is this an effective way to advertise? Talk about it.

I just don’t get the appeal of advertising through something that can only be seen on aerial view. I see the website where the farm is is already advertising for the next company who wants their logo carved out in their corn maze!

Aerial advertising can be effective if done right. I don’t think McDonald’s would consider this aerial advertising for them…more like a publicity stunt. McDonald’s is getting a lot of attention from this but I have to wonder how much, if anything, that they paid for this corn maze carving. After all, the farm where this is located is getting visitors to come to their location to walk through this maze and I see a Froggy 98 radio station is also a sponsor.

I think it’s a fun way to advertise and probably costs nothing compared to a national ad campaign.
