High Fructose Corn Syrup Ads Sour Parents

Tuesday September 23, 2008
The Corn Refiners Association is causing quite a conversation among parents through its new commercials promoting high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Studies have been released saying HFCS is linked to childhood obesity but the CRA claims that's not entirely true and is playing defense with the new ad campaign. One commercial shows two moms at a birthday party and one says, "Wow, you don't care what the kids eat, huh?" and then she adds, "That has high fructose corn syrup in it." Another version shows a couple having a picnic and when one offers the other a bite of a popsicle that has HFCS in it, the reaction is, "I thought you loved me." The ads go on to show the accusers speechless when they're asked what exactly is wrong with products with HFCS.

More on the High Fructose Corn Syrup Ads:

The campaign is mainly targeting mothers and many are storming their blogs with posts blasting the ad campaign. Comments range from negative remarks about the tone of the ads to facts released in previous studies about HFCS.

The CRA is planning an 18-month long ad campaign that's worth a reported $20-30 million. Besides TV commercials, full-page ads will be taken out in newspapers across the U.S. The website, SweetSurprise.com, is also part of the campaign.

I had bulimia for 20 years and found after I cut out corn syrup, corn oil, cornstarch, and maltodextrin, I got better and I am healthy. I think those products are poison…not ssure if it is because they are made with sulfuric acid, the herbicides they put on them or the fact that bT corn is made to dissolve the guts of insects…..I have also found GERDS patients get better with cutting out these products as well. They are POISON!!!!

After giving rats HFCS for an extended time (just like us humans) their livers started looking like those of alcoholics. The average Amerian eats 40lbs of that a year. Add the two together. But the alternative isn’t great either. No calorie sweeteners can mess up your health pretty bad, even the smallest amount. Check it out online, just look up aspertame dangers on google. All of this is why I just don’t drink pop (soda) anymore.

Great spoof videos to respond to the “vid-washing” the Corn Growers and food giants are pulling.

HFCS is linked to SO MANY diseases! Eat real food!

The ads are more than misleading. However - if you notice the end sentance: “use it responsibly” - that’s their disclaimer. It’s truly horrible stuff and is the root cause of half the diabetes in this country. I’m so glad that this group of parents has caught the ad and is voicing the concern.

Anytime I hear “fine in moderation,” I know it’s not good for me so I stay away from it. In the ad with the two moms, she says “fine in moderation” so fast, I couldn’t even understand her the first few times I saw the commercial.

It’s like saying, “Pork…the other white meat”

I LOVE pork…yet I know it’s far from lean, healthy protein.

“High Fructose Corn Syrup” is far from that yummy vegetable, corn.

We’re back to “Have a cigarette…t’s good for you!

Why don’t they do themselves and everyone else a big favor and just shift to the growing market for ethanol fuel? It’s not like the corn growers are really hurting for a market at the moment.

And besides, sodas taste better with real sugar. Get ahold of a Coke imported from Mexico and see for yourself.

I cut out every speck of corn syrup from my diet and I’ve lost so much weight! I look like I did when I was twenty five (I’m 47) just by cutting out sodas and other crap. (don’t try substituting diet soda, though, it’s got even worse health consequences)
- CORN SYRUP IS FATTENING! it changes your metabolism unlike other sweeteneners and causes your body to hang on to every calorie.

I can see why the ads would be slightly sour to some people, but they’re aren’t exactly “false.” Everything is fine in moderation. Now corn syrup is far from its vegatable cousin, but that doesn’t mean it deserves the name “poison.” It’s not the healthiest thing in the world, I admit, but you have to admit some candies and sweets just wouldn’t be the same without it. I’ve actually ate it directly on pancakes before; in fact, I’ve eaten it straight out of the bottle before. Of course, that’s just the regular corn syrup not the HFCS stuff. Besides, yeah corn susbtances of any kind are not good if consumed in large quantities because corn is a starch. The potato is the same way.

If folks would just eat in moderation like they’re suppose to, no food would have a bad reputation. For example, grease is going goodbye. I don’t like this peanut oil crud they fry chicken in nowadays, I liked my grease just fine! Why must the health obsessed take all the good food away? Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for healthy food; I love salads, fruits–I could eat fruit over candy anyday, and grilled/baked over fried–baked lemon pepper chicken is the best! But it would be nice if people could just eat whatever they wanted without all the ruckus. Wow, Michael Pollan is right, Americans do having an eating disorder(see, “The Omnivore’s Dilemma”). Not to pick a fight, just saying that we make too big of a deal about food nowadays. Kids can’t even drink Coke anymore! Not that I drink Coke, I prefer Mountain Dew.

Well, whether or not HFCS and Sucrose/Cane Sugar have the same nutritional value, HFCS just doesn’t taste as great as cane sugar, especially when it comes to sodas. I would much rather be drinking Jones Sodas, Boylans Sodas, or Mexican Coca-Cola rather than alot of the American sodas. HFCS sodas are just way too sugary tasting and not as great as the sucrose sweetened beverages. People should just drink less soda, and also drink better soda. Sugar-sweetened beverages tastes better and overall it’s better for the environment (No GMO’s). So leave the corn for your cars, and keep the sugar for your soda.

I THINK EVERYTHING IN THIS COUNTRY HAS TO DO WITH MANIPUTULATION. WE WERE LIVING LONGER, SO THROW A WRENCH IN TO THE WORKS. PUT HFCS IN EVERYTHING. I HAVE BEEN WRITING COMPANIES COMPLAINING ABOUT HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IN ALL THEIR FOODS. IT’S EVEN IN STOVE TOP STUFFING. WHY WOULD YOU PUT HFCS IN STUFFING. I WROTE TO ONE COMPANY REGARDING BREAD. I STATED THAT I HAVE BAKED MY OWN BREAD AND TONS OF OTHER BAKED GOODS AND NEVER HAD A RECIPE THAT ASKED FOR A CUP OF HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. NO RESPONSE
OF COURSE. I THINK IT IS VILE STUFF!!

(16) Stephanie Green, RD says:

There is much confusion about what high fructose corn syrup really is. Most people have heard of high fructose corn syrup, but aren’t aware of how similar it is to common table sugar. Scientists continue to confirm that high fructose corn syrup is no different from other sweeteners. It is essentially the same as table sugar and honey, and has the same number of calories– 4 calories per gram, and your body metabolizes them the same way. Like sugar or honey, high fructose corn syrup has calories. Excessive calories, from whatever source, can promote weight gain. But replacing high fructose corn syrup with sugar will not reduce obesity or improve health. They are nutritionally the same.

(17) Brett Knoss says:

These adds are comparing corn syrup to sugar, lets not that corn syrup has been a sweetener in pantries for the last hundread years. The problem is not high fructose corn syrup it’s not fructose in your morning cearial, the problem is the amount of calories from sweeteners including corn syrup and sugar but also honey or maple. I do agree that foods are oversweetened and that if ethanol increases corn prices macking HFCS less viable then sugar and honey will go up in price and help things. As for fats the use of peanut or canola oil in frying is because of the poisionous rape seed oil and hydrogenated canola oil introduced in responce to fears over colesterol in butter and lard, this fat is dangerous and should be removed from food.
