Retromercial Break - Smurfberry Crunch Cereal

Friday October 3, 2008
Show of hands. How many of you have heard of the Smurfs? Lots of hands.

Now how many of you have heard of Smurfberry Crunch cereal? Some hands go down.

And finally, how many of you have actually eaten Smurfberry Crunch? I would fall into that category.

I stumbled across an old Smurfberry Crunch commercial from the 80s that brought back memories of jelly shoes, the Rubik's cube, parachute pants (I only owned one pair, I swear) and words like "radical" and "totally awesome," which I'm still accused of using every now and then. Post launched Smurfberry Crunch in 1983, the same year as General Mills introduced Pac-Man cereal. This was a time when themed cereals weren't as common as they are now.

Both of these commercials are so indicative of the time. They have a catchy jingle (if you're 10) but the Pac-Man cereal wins with its use of real kids doing the Pac-Man dance wearing their very fashionable duds. It was definitely the 80s.

More on Smurfberry Crunch and Pac-Man Cereals:

I fell for the gimmick. Or to be fair, I wanted them and my Mom graciously forked over the dough so I could try both cereals.

Smurfberry Crunch was eventually pulled off the shelves when some kids ended up with some interesting colors in their bowel movements. However, Post revamped the cereal and brought it back in 1987 as Smurf Magic Berries.

Smurfs taste good apparently. Smurf PEZ, Smurf Gum, Smurf Cookies and Smurf Pasta have all been on the market. There has even been Smurf Toothpaste and Smurf Vitamins on the shelves.

The Smurfs and Pac-Man have given up on their cereal ventures and can't be found at stores anymore. But if you're really determined to get your hands on a 20+ year old cereal, I actually found a vintage, beat up box of Smurfberry Crunch on Ebay that some lucky winner has already snatched up.

As for me, I didn't even finish my box of Smurfberry Crunch and I never tried the Smurf Magic Berries cereal that came out in the late 80s. I was way too mature to get sucked into that trap again. I had moved on to Swatch watches, Tretorns and a new thing in "record stores" called a CD.

However, I did enjoy Pac-Man cereal briefly. But that came to a sad end one day when we brought a new box home, only to find the ants had been happily munching on it while it sat on the grocery store shelves. Now I just stick to Cheerios.
