FTC Shuts Down Major Spam Operation

Wednesday October 22, 2008
The Federal Trade Commission has put a stop to a spam operation that is responsible for as much as 1/3 of the world's spam Emails. The FTC says it received more than 3 million complaints about the "spam gang" over the years that included spammers in Australia, Canada, China, India, Russia New Zealand and the U.S. The use of false headers to hide where the Email was being sent from, not including a way to opt-out of mailings and failing to provide a physical postal address violates the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003. Through these methods, the defendants were able to send billions of spam messages leading customers to Web sites that have now been shut down and the assets of two individuals involved have been frozen.

If you're going to use Email to market your company, you must do so responsibly. Check the Spam FAQs to make sure you're not violating any anti-spam laws before you send out your company's Email.
