Tip of the Week: The Copywriter and the SPEC Ad

Friday July 16, 2004
Q: If my words are brilliant, but my drawing terrible, how do I arrange a good spec ad?

A: Clients looking for a copywriter aren't interested in your graphic design skills. A SPEC ad can simply consist of your plain text and this is how you'll be submitting your actual copy to a real client as well. Your ability to write great copy is what matters and the client knows it.

If you're freelancing, you'll more than likely be handing over your copy without even talking with a graphic designer. So the actual design and graphics used will be completely out of your creative control.

Special thanks to a copywriter in need of SPEC ad help for this week's Ask Apryl question. If you have a question about advertising or public relations, submit your question to the Ask Apryl segment now.
