Parodies seemed to rule the biggest advertising day of the year. Some companies tried to ride the success of previous campaigns...not necessarily their own.

The Bud commercials for the white-guy version of Whassup? featured sweater-tied-around-the-neck yuppies saying, "What are you doing?"

M&M/Mars also got into the Whassup? game with its ad for Snickers Cruncher. People buy and smash talking dolls from a street vendor. One of those dolls just happens to say, "Whassup?"

Frito-Lay had a humorous Doritos self-parody. Ali Landry, the chip-catching bombshell, is knocked out on a tennis court by the new chip with more cheese. Even a big cheese stain dusts her forehead.

Pepsi also marched in the parody parade. The Bob Dole Pepsi ad parodied his previous Viagra commercials.

George Foreman heated things up with an iMac/Gap-inspired ad. People danced around with his new colorful grills in front of a white background.

But even humor can't force viewers to buy products. Companies that don't sell products or services geared to the average football fan and aren't a mass vehicle for customers end up wasting their advertising dollars. But products that are directed toward a large segment of the population tend to succeed more during the Super Bowl.
