Super Bowl XLI Sideline Wrap Up: Second Quarter

From Apryl Duncan, for About.com

Second Quarter, First Commercial Break

Brand: Budweiser
Company: Anheuser-Busch
Description: Dog Down on His Luck
Agency: DDB
Goes for the aww factor and delivers. Could have used a better song for the ad. "Ain't That A Kick In The Head?" is also being used right now in a Hardee's commercial.

Brand: Garmin
Company: Garmin International Inc.
Description: Garmin Takes on the World
Agency: Fallon
Like the paper road map creature. Ad reminiscent of Pepto Max where super-sized villains destroy a city because they have heartburn, nausea, indigestion, etc. Also hard to understand lyrics used in the song for the Garmin commercial.

Second Quarter, Second Commercial Break

Brand: CareerBuilder
Company: CareerBuilder
Description: It's a Jungle Out There
Agency: Cramer-Krasselt
Aww. We miss the monkeys already but love the concept behind the new "It's a Jungle Out There" ad campaign for CareerBuilder. Let's face it. We've all been there.

Brand: Doritos
Company: Frito-Lay
Description: Check Out Girl
Agency: Consumer-generated ad
The check out girl gets turned on by the customer's choice of Doritos. The ad ends with a clean up on register six. Viewers needed a bath after that commercial. The power of suggestion makes GoDaddy.com ads look tame.

Brand: Chevy HHR
Company: GM
Description: Guys Can't Keep Their Hands Off It
Agency: Consumer-generated ad from Chevy Ad Challenge Winner
Just when you were starting to get over the Doritos commercial, this one aired. Half-naked guys molest a car full of girls. Would've been nice to see the car and it's hard to picture a bunch of men watching the Super Bowl wanting to see half-naked dudes dancing around.

Second Quarter, Third Commercial Break

Brand: Bud Light
Company: Anheuser-Busch
Description: Fist Bump Is Out
Agency: DDB
Some may cry "too violent" but this is a good-humored spot for Bud Light that should get more airtime for it to truly become a classic from Anheuser-Busch. After all, the spot's target demographic is adult males and this type of ad speaks directly to that particular consumer.

Brand: BeatYourRisk.com
Company: King Pharmaceuticals
Description: You've Gotta Have Heart
Agency: Publicis Groupe's Glow Worm
The commercial never mentions it but the ad is really promoting the drug Altace. King Pharmaceuticals did a good job making this ad stand out, considering it is the company's only ad in a sea of beer and car commercials.

Company: NFL for the United Way
Description: Help the United Way
Agency: Triple Double
This 10 second spot isn't meant to be flashy. It's a simple commercial that will go relatively unnoticed after its airing but it's the NFL's way of showing its involvement and encouraging others to get involved too.
