The Corn Refiners Association has released another commercial in its multimillion-dollar ad campaign for high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). This time, two teens sit around the breakfast table with one questioning the other's choice in cereal because it contains HFCS. Keeping with the campaign's theme, when asked why high fructose corn syrup is so bad, the other teen is speechless.
The ad campaign is primarily targeting mothers with the CRA spending between $20-30 million for the 18 month advertising blitz. The commercials are causing heated debates online among parents with very few defending HFCS. Visitors to About.com have plenty to say on this topic as well.
"If folks would just eat in moderation like they’re suppose to, no food would have a bad reputation," member Brittany told About.com.
"High Fructose Corn Syrup is far from that yummy vegetable, corn," member J.S. said. "We’re back to 'Have a cigarette…it’s good for you!'"

Show of hands. How many of you have heard of the Smurfs? Lots of hands.
Now how many of you have heard of Smurfberry Crunch cereal? Some hands go down.
And finally, how many of you have actually
eaten Smurfberry Crunch? I would fall into that category.
I stumbled across an old Smurfberry Crunch commercial from the 80s that brought back memories of jelly shoes, the Rubik's cube, parachute pants (I only owned one pair, I swear) and words like "radical" and "totally awesome," which I'm still accused of using every now and then.

Smurfberry Crunch in 1983, the same year as General Mills introduced
Pac-Man cereal. This was a time when themed cereals weren't as common as they are now.
Both of these commercials are so indicative of the time. They have a catchy jingle (if you're 10) but the Pac-Man cereal wins with its use of real kids doing the Pac-Man dance wearing their very fashionable duds. It was definitely the 80s.
