Anti-KFC Billboard Goes Up

Thursday August 21, 2003
After being rejected in cities across the U.S., an anti-KFC billboard is now up in Montgomery, Alabama. The billboard shows Colonel Sanders with a bloody butcher knife about to slaughter a plucked chicken. The tag line reads, "Kentucky Fried Cruelty...We Do Chicken Wrong."

It's all a part of the crusade People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has launched against KFC. In July 2003, PETA sued KFC for statements made on the fast food chain's Web site regarding the treatment of chickens.

Earlier this week, PETA wrote a letter to advertising agencies BBDO Worldwide in New York and Foote, Cone and Belding in Chicago, asking the agencies to drop their bid for the KFC account. PETA previously approached pitchman Jason Alexander and asked him to question KFC about its treatment of chickens. Alexander has since left the ad campaign, saying his contract was not renewed.
