Teens Talk High Fructose Corn Syrup

Monday October 6, 2008
The Corn Refiners Association has released another commercial in its multimillion-dollar ad campaign for high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). This time, two teens sit around the breakfast table with one questioning the other's choice in cereal because it contains HFCS. Keeping with the campaign's theme, when asked why high fructose corn syrup is so bad, the other teen is speechless. The ad campaign is primarily targeting mothers with the CRA spending between $20-30 million for the 18 month advertising blitz. The commercials are causing heated debates online among parents with very few defending HFCS. Visitors to About.com have plenty to say on this topic as well.

"If folks would just eat in moderation like they’re suppose to, no food would have a bad reputation," member Brittany told About.com.

"High Fructose Corn Syrup is far from that yummy vegetable, corn," member J.S. said. "We’re back to 'Have a cigarette…it’s good for you!'"

This campaign has backfired on the corn association. Instead of spinning HFCS in a positive light, it has just made more people aware that they need to check their labels. I know that’s what I’m doing now. I didn’t even pay attention to HFCS before.

What I don’t get is why they would think they need to raise awareness of high fructose corn syrup. It is in everything already, even the chocolate cake I ate last night from my local bakery. Why tip people off because I had no idea it was in so much of what I eat until the commercials aired.

There is quite a debate on your blog post about the first two ads in the campaign. I think this one and the one with the moms are the most offensive to parents. Look at all the comments I am talking about here

I have noticed in my travels to the Scandinavian countries that their grocery store products do not contain high fructose corn syrup as a by-product, just sugar or honey. Another example of how the dollar overpowers common sense and/or community good will here in the USA.

Corn is subsidized in the US so it is cheaper than sugar. Recent research is showing that because of the large amounts of Corn Syrup consumed our bodies molecular structure is showing changes in with proteins in our body that more closely resemble corn. You are what you consume and this can’t be good.

These commercials are really irresponsible… and not a great idea either, because people have the internet and can’t be duped as easily as they used to.

The truth is that fructose has been shown to be more readily converted to fat in the body than other sugars. I was just reading about this today at this Anti HFCS website.

Just get the word out. HFCS is undesireable for so many reasons - taste being a big one!

We need to get rid of HFCS, and we need to cut down on our calories too. People are always going to drink soda and eat junk food - but maybe we should drink soda with fewer than 250 calories per bottle!
