Suicide Prevention Group Wants GM Ad Yanked

Friday February 9, 2007
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention wants GM to remove its ad featuring an assembly line robot that jumps off a bridge. The organization has sent a letter to GM telling the automaker it needs to pull the ad from the air and the company's Web site as well as issue an apology.

The commercial made its debut during Super Bowl XLI. The ad aired during the second quarter. The AFSP says the commercial makes fun of mental illness and depression. The group suggests people might see the ad and think suicide is an option when they're faced with problems.

More on the GM Commercial:

GM doesn't plan on removing the spot. It's next scheduled air date is during the Academy Awards on ABC February 25.

The AFSP's complaint comes on the heels of GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign getting a Snickers ad that also debuted during the Super Bowl pulled from airwaves and on the Internet. The two organizations said the Snickers commercial was anti-gay.

Seeing things like this always remind me that no matter what… someones going to whine about one thing or another (Kinda like I am right now) Anyways, its a commerical… watching something like that isn’t going to give someone an idea to kill themselfs, its not even going to push them towards it. When you see a commerical for Coke but you drink Pepsi, do you just switch to Coke because you saw it on TV? No! You like Pepsi! Just like people like Life over Death.
