Losing your job could be the best thing that ever happened to you. It may sound crazy but just think about it. Would you ever have been bold enough to take the leap into freelancing if you still had the steady 9-5 gig?
Just how can you get started when the rent's due, your daughter needs braces and you actually do like to eat?
Shed Your Hurt Feelings
No one likes to be fired or laid off. Even if you hated your job, you would much rather leave on your own.
But don't dwell on it. The best form of revenge is success and that can be your biggest motivation.
Evaluate Your Skills
If you've been answering phones and filing for the past five years, that experience isn't exactly going to win you freelancing projects. But your talent is what counts.
For instance, if you're considering the freelance copywriting field and you formerly worked with computers, you could use your knowledge of the industry and specialize in technical copy.
Be creative when evaluating your skills. The more unique your idea is, the better. There could be a huge niche market your talent could fulfill.
Make Contacts
Chances are, you already have a good set of contacts. Co-workers or any other businesses you dealt with in your previous job(s) can come in handy.
If they can't become your customers themselves, they might be able to provide you with additional names you can contact.
In any case, they won't know about your new career path unless you tell them.
Adjust Your Finances
Most people have at least six month's worth of savings before they quit their day job and start down the freelancing track. You don't have that luxury.
You may find your freelancing initially brings in just enough to pay the bills. Profits you can brag about will come later.
If worse comes to worse, consider financial alternatives such as your home's equity or even a part-time job to help keep your business going. However, be forewarned, a part-time job will take time away from you concentrating solely on your freelancing. Ultimately, it will take even more time for you to achieve success.
Just don't give up. Success takes time.
